Back from the hospital...

We have just got back from the hospital. The ABR was performed and it shows Katya is almost completely deaf in one ear and partially deaf in the other. Molds have been made for hearing aids. The audiologist is lining us up for a cochlear implant.

This basically confirms what we thought but it is a bit more severe than we had hoped.

Still there were clear replicatable responses in one ear at higher volumes so that is encouraging.

The audiologist also told us that all the treatments are free and highly prioritised. He thinks we may be slotted in within 3-4 months for the implant... which has to happen in Christchurch.

This is just the beginning of a wonderful hearing journey for you and your daughter. It may be different than anything you'd ever imagined, but in teaching her how to hear the world, you will be blessed with learning how to truly "listen".

This is a great blog, and I hope you'll consider adding it to the aggregator at Deaf Village (www.deafvillage.com) -- we'd love to have you as part of our community! There are many parents who have been there/done that and would be happy to answer any questions you may have as you navigate this new world!
